Kaviko Abdul Rahman, a poet who travelled across the literary map of Tamil Nadu with a headlamp of modernism known by the title “Kaviko” (Emperor among poets).
Kaviko born in Madurai on 9th November 1937, had worked as a professor and head of the department of Tamil for 29 years at the Islamia College, Vaniyambadi.
His “Aalapanai”, a collection of Poetry, won Sahitya Akademi Award for Tamil in 1999. APioneer in the Vaniyambadi literary movement. Kavikko’s role as a poet is infinite. He tried to experiment many literary forms like Haiku and Ghazal in Tamil. He even introduced Sufism and Surrealism to Tamil poetry and translated many Urdu and Hindi poems into Tamil. Apparently, he was one among who introduced modernism to Tamil Poetry.
He died, at the age of 80, due to age-related illness at his home in Panaiyur, Chennai on 02-06-2017 in the early hours on Friday.
